Meaning: Apatosaurus means The 'Deceptive Lizard'- this dinosaur was also named Brontosaurus ('thunder lizard') but due to problems with the fossils lacking skull material controversy reined for a 100 years before both dinosaurs were understood to be the same. Apatosaurus being named and described 2 years earlier (in 1877) meant that this dinosaur retained its name.
Herbivore: It browsed off the vegetation of the Jurassic landscape – although it is believed it could not lift its head and neck vertically, so having the neck so long may have had a different purpose – possibly feeding off hard to reach vegetation on lake edges.
When it Lived: Late Jurassic – around 157 to 146 million years ago.
Size: Apatosaurus grew to around 27 metres long and was one of the largest animals to walk this planet.
Location known: North America.
